We need to seek God daily. Pursue a relationship with Him and place him as a priority in our lives. I failed at this. I believe all of us do many different times throughout our lives. We need to be aware and mindful of what we are prioritizing in our daily routines.
The routine with the wrong purpose
Recently I was just going through the days and weeks as I normally do. Taking my oldest daughter to school, cleaning the house, potty training my two year old, etc. I had some worship music on one day. I just needed a break from the cartoons and put on a Pandora worship station while I started making dinner and my girls got their rooms cleaned up.
The next day I was going about my morning and pulled up pandora on my phone to play the same station while I was putting my make-up on. All of a sudden it occurred to me that I have made it almost a routine habit. I constantly put on worship music in the background to listen to. Now I want you to understand that there is nothing wrong with this! I LOVE worship music, it is encouraging and helps calm me down when I feel stressed. My girls love to dance to music and I don’t have to worry about any bad messages or language hidden in the songs.
Your intentions and your actions are two very different things
What I had done, however, was to replace time with God by playing worship music in the background. My relationship with God had become secondary to everything else in my daily life. I was not communicating with him, praying, worshiping, or studying his word. Now, I don’t know what you believe or how strongly you prioritize your faith, but for me, it has been an incredible journey through life in which I have very recently come back into an understanding that God should be at the center of my life.
We recently moved and are in a rural area. The churches around here are not exactly what I am looking for in a church, on top of the fact that my husband and I usually only have Sunday to spend together as a family with our girls. So I have been watching services from Grace Center Church in Franklin, TN. They post their services on youtube and I usually take the time to watch the service on Monday during my daughter’s nap so that I can really focus and hear the message.
God is not a task to check off of your list
This may be on a Monday during the week, but it holds the same concept as going to church on Sunday and then spending the rest of your week giving the Lord no thought or consideration until Sunday comes around again. I had planned on spending a few minutes in prayer at the beginning of every day but I forgot about all of those good intentions because I got busy and made excuses. God became my background music. I heard pandora playing and thought “yes, I’m doing so great!”
1 Chronicles 16:11
Seek the Lord and His strength; yearn for and seek His face and to be in His presence continually!
Could it be written more clearly? Yearn! What an incredibly descriptive word. Some people may laugh and say it seems funny to use such “old world” language, but how better could you describe what we are supposed to feel. We are called to earnestly long to spend time with the Lord.
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and He will give you everything.
And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
We could go on all day. Seriously, get yourself a free Bible app on your phone. I love my actual Bible, but the ability to pull up the app on my phone, type in one word and explore what the Bible says on any given topic is absolutely amazing. Technology sometimes can truly be a blessing.
The point is, we are called to seek Him! Don’t put Him in your background with Pandora. Put Him in front of your life and daily activities. Communicate and search for Him. How many songs have you heard, or Christians have you heard say “He is the name above all names?” This is not only meant in the context of “do not worship other false gods.” It is meant in the spirit of not placing anyone or anything before God. If you put God first, He will clear a path for you and be there with an answer for all of your concerns.
Your phone may be the thing you placed above him, maybe it’s your job or your marriage. He has to be first if we expect him to fulfill his promises. God is incredible. He will follow through on all of the promises He has given us, but he also expects us to obey and follow His directions.
Seek Him and call out to Him
There is a song by Jeremy Riddle and the chorus lyrics were standing out to me one day. I was singing along and worshiping and I actually had to sit down and just meditate on that one verse. Do you ever have something that just stands out to you and it takes a while to truly sink in?
All hail King Jesus
All hail the Lord of Heaven and earth
All hail King Jesus
All hail the Savior of the world
It took me a while, but eventually, I realized what had me stuck on this verse was the word hail.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines hail as
- To greet with enthusiastic approval
- Salute, Greet
- To greet or summon by calling
Number three hit me in the gut. To summon by calling! How often have I sat back and waited on God? Do not misunderstand me, there is a time we are called to wait on God and not move, what I am referring to is not the action of waiting on God but the spirit of laziness where we do nothing. You can wait on God and still want to be in his presence. We should be constantly worshiping and communicating with God even while we wait on his direction.
Your greatest resource is the sacrifice Jesus made
God sent Jesus to die on the cross so wash away all sin. Does this mean your sins are forgiven? Yes, but if you go farther back to the old testament you will realize that because Adam and Eve sinned, in the beginning, we were no longer able to communicate with God in the same way. Jesus paid for ALL sins so that we could once again communicate with him. We can talk to Him and pray to Him because of the sacrifice Jesus made. If we are not seeking the Lord we are not truly benefitting from Jesus’ sacrifice to the full extent.
All is for Your glory, all is for Your name,
All is for Your glory
That in all things You may have first place
That in all things You may have preeminence
This has been one of my favorite worship songs lately. I feel like it just points to the most basic things we should be focusing on and gives a very clear picture of how things should be prioritized. God should have first place, and everything we do is to glorify Him. Part of this song comes from Colossians 1:18. God is called to hold preeminence which refers to a rank of superiority and a priority of place.
If God is meant to be first in our lives then we need to seek Him out daily. We can still wait on God’s perfect timing in our lives, but it does not mean that we cannot wait in His presence and be closer to Him.
How do you start to seek God?
So what does this mean to you? Are you unsure of how to seek Him or how to even start? Start very simple, if you download a Bible app there are hundreds of reading plans that will guide you through the bible. You can read all the way through or you can simply pick a topic that speaks to your heart and start seeing what advice God has provided to help you.
If you want to dig deeper and learn how to speak to God and become comfortable in his presence, the Bible provides endless suggestions that refer to thanksgiving. This was the easiest place for me to start. Just take two minutes in the morning and say “Thank you Lord for…” It is not very difficult and it will get you into a more comfortable place for speaking with God.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving; go into His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name.
Have you ever had that friend that is just exhausting to talk with? Every time you talk they tell you every gripe and complaint they have. All of their problems and concerns are at the forefront. It’s exhausting. When you seek God, He will always listen to our problems and concerns.
Thankfulness is so much more powerful than complaints
He has asked us to trust Him with our lives and our problems. But, how much more of an amazing relationship would it be to first approach Him with a grateful heart? Consider all of the times you have been blessed. People, jobs, promotions, getting over a cold, or simply a good night of sleep. There is nothing too big or too small that God wouldn’t love to hear about. Thank Him and you will start to see your entire attitude and day transformed by his presence in your life.
Put God first and seek him every day. Chase after Him and you will catch Him. He wants to be a part of your life. He wants to shower you with blessings and gifts if you will actually invite Him into your life instead of putting Him in the background.
